What Is And What Is Not A Diplomatic Backchannel | The 11th Hour | MSNBC

STORIES IS THE QUESTION.
>>HUH-UHITY, THANK YOU FOR AGAIN AGREEING TO STEP INTO THE
BREACH. YOUR REACTION TO TONIGHT’S
“WASHINGTON POST” STORY, IF TRUE, JARED TRYING TO SET UP A
COMMUNICATIONS CHANNEL. >>THREE THINGS, BRIAN.
A LITTLE HISTORY, A LITTLE IRONY A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE.
IT WAS FEBRUARY 21ST, 1969 THAT A RELATIVELY OBSCURE 31-YEAR-OLD
SET UP THE FIRST BACK CHANNEL WITH SOVIET AMBASSADOR
DEBREENAN. THAT FELLOW’S NAME WAS-RY
KISSINGER. AND IT WAS NOT KNOWN TO THE
STATE DEPARTMENT. I NOTE THAT KISSINGER SAT DOWN
WITH DONALD TRUMP, I DON’T KNOW IF JARED KUSHNER WAS IN THE
MEETING IN NOVEMBER AND SUBSEQUENTLY.
WHO KNOWS WHERE THE IDEA OF A BACK CHANNEL CAME FROM.
THERE IS A LOT OF PRECEDENT. >>BACK CHANNEL IS A DIPLOMATIC
TERM OF EFFORT. THAT WAS EFFORTS IN THE ATOMIC
AGE, ESPECIALLY IN THE COLD WAR. AND RICK STENGEL SITTING HERE AT
THE TABLE A VETERAN OF THE STATE DEPARTMENT, AIMED AT A BETTER
WORLD, A SAFER WORLD, GOING AROUND THE BUREAUCRACY AND
CHANNELS OF COMMUNICATIONS THAT EXISTED THAT COULD GET MUDDLED.
SO THAT IS SOMETHING QUITE DIFFERENT, UNTIL WE LEARN
EVIDENCE THAT THIS WAS AN EFFORT TOWARD A BETTER AND SAFER WORLD
FOR ALL, RICK STENGEL, BEAR ME OUT.
>>WELL, YES, I THINK THERE’S DIPLOMACY AND THERE IS THERE’S
SOME KIND OF THING THAT MIGHT BE NEFARIOUS.
I THOUGHT THE INTERESTING POINT IN THE REUTER’S STORY, ABOUT IS
THERE A QUID PRO QUO BETWEEN RELAXING SANCTIONS AND MAKING
DEALS WITH BANKS. THAT’S AN INAPPROPRIATE
CONVERSATION. >>HUE, BACK TO YOU.

  1. It's just a secret communication channel with the country that interfered in our election….nothing to see here.

  2. This would be a great time for MSNBC to switch gears slightly, and take some of CNN's audience. Classless News Network.

  3. I cannot wait until some of these guys have to answer questions to Congress. I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation for sll of it. Then afterward, they'll all have drinks at the Regal Beagle and laugh about the misunderstanding.

  4. Russian reset argument is another rubbish deflection from the White House which is evident just in the behaviour. Considering we know the Russians interfered in the election if a US/Russia reset is the aim of the administration all these secret meetings etc etc that keep coming to light aren't the way forward, transparent, open dialogue is, not the opposite. Trump smells rotten.

  5. The other "back-channels" which as these guys say don't compare, were all done by administration officials. This deal was before trump became president when he has no official gov't diplomatic position. It's a violation of the Logan Act.

  6. Listen, the Russians — who just spent all of last year trying to steer the election in Trump's direction — only wanted to be able to talk to Trump without the intel community being able to listen in. And now, suddenly, it's a big scandal! If Trump has something to hide, then why did he release his tax returns, huh?
