IMMEDIATELY.>>MORE INDIANA SCHOOL DISTRICTS HAVE RAISED TEACHER SALARIES THIS YEAR THAN IN ANY OTHER YEAR IN RECENT HISTORY. TONIGHT I’MER –>>THAT’S THE GOVERNOR OUTLINING HIS PLAN TO TACKLE GROWING DEMANDS FOR TEACHER PAY. HERE IS THE BREAKDOWN. WAITING UNTIL THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY DRAFTS THE NEXT BUDGET. IN THAT BUDGET HE WANTS TO PUT AN ADDITIONAL $250 MILLION FROM SURPLUS TOWARD TEACHER RETIREMENT FUNDS. THE GOVERNOR SAYS THAT WILL GENERATE $50 MILLION A YEAR TO REDIRECT INTO TEACHER RAISES AND ADD TO THAT $65 MILLION ALREADY GOING TO TEACHER RAISES EACH YEAR. INDIANA COULD SEE MORE THAN $100 MILLION IN ANNUAL PAY INCREASES.>>>TONIGHT THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT IS RESPONDING TO THE PLAN, SAYING IN PART, I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT INDIANA CONTINUES TO DELAY NECESSARY ACTION. STUDENTS CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE MORE GREAT EDUCATORS WHILE INDIANA DECIDES IF WE CAN AFFORD THEM.>>>ANOTHER BIG FOCUS OF TONIGHT’S STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS WAS THE DANGER OUT ON INDIANA ROADS AND THE NEED FOR A HANDS FREE DEVICE DRIVING LAW.
