Soft Power Awards – George Pippas | Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy
The role of the Hellenes and the Philhellenes is very important. They are the pinnacle of the Hellenic cultural diplomacy. They are also the ambassadors who represent Greece 24 hours a day, by interacting witht heir fellow citizens in the country they live in. I, as the first Helene to be elected Mayor of Cambridge, will tell you that I have worked very hard to promote Hellenism in the United Kingdom. I believe that in a spiritual center such as Cambridge, the absence of the Hellenic culture is not allowed. In addition to my support to the Hellenic antiquities found in the Fitzwilliam Museum, I have also worked hard for the creation and reconstruction of of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Athanasios in Cambridge. On the one hand, it has been a personal bet of mine, during my service as a mayor, but on the other hand I considered this to be the ultimate duty towards my country and Hellenism in general. The culture of Greece is the vehicle for a softer and pedagogical policy. We believe in it and and we fight to achieve it. Cultural diplomacy is not only a responsibility for politicians but it’s also a matter that concerns all of us.
