ANNUAL “PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY” PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES AN
OPPORTUNITY FOR ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE SCHOOL’S
ADMINISTRATION FOR ONE DAY, AND THE GOAL IS FOR SCHOOLS AND
BUSINESSES TO FORM LASTING PARTNERSHIPS THAT IMPROVE THE
QUALITY OF EDUCATION, AND WORKPLACE READINESS. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT
“PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY” IN ACTION.>>MY NAME IS GINA MILLSAPS, AND
I’M THE PROUD PRINCIPAL AT DUNBAR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
IN DOWNTOWN PHOENIX. THE “PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY”
PROGRAM PROVIDES THAT OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR BUSINESS
PARTNERS FROM OUR COMMUNITY TO COME IN AND BE INSPIRED BY
VISITING THE SCHOOL, AND WATCHING THE STUDENTS. AND REALLY CREATING THAT
COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP TO WHERE THEY FEEL VESTED IN THEIR
SCHOOLS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. BECAUSE THESE ARE GOING TO BE
THEIR FUTURE EMPLOYEES. SO HOW CAN WE WORK TOGETHER TO
PROVIDE THE BEST EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR KIDS? THROUGH THE OPPORTUNITY TO
PARTNER WITH OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES, WE’VE BEEN ABLE TO
BRING SOME AMAZING PROGRAMMING TO OUR SCHOOL. SO FOR EXAMPLE, WE’VE PARTNERED
WITH THE MULLEN FOUNDATION, AND WE WERE ABLE TO WORK WITH
PHOENIX CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL AS WELL, AND PROVIDE A GARDEN THAT
CREATES A SPACE FOR MINDFULNESS, AND TEACHES THE STUDENTS HOW TO
EAT HEALTHY AND LIVE A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE. WE’VE ALSO PARTNERED WITH ASU
VIRGINIA G. PIPER CREATIVE WRITING CENTER. AND THEY COME IN EVERY TWO WEEKS
AND WORK WITH OUR STUDENTS ON THEIR CREATIVE WRITING. I’M VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT
CREATING BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS, BECAUSE THROUGH THOSE
PARTNERSHIPS, OUR STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO SEE THAT THEY HAVE
INDIVIDUALS IN THE COMMUNITY THAT CARE ABOUT THEM,
AND ARE VESTED IN THEM AND THEIR EDUCATION. IT REALLY ALLOWS BUSINESS
PARTNERS TO COME IN AND HELP SUPPORT PROGRAMS AND

WHAT THEY’RE DOING. AND THEY’RE PROUD AND THEY WANT

TO LEARN ABOUT THE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS
THAT THEY HAVE HERE. THAT’S SOMETHING THAT I DIDN’T
HAVE A LOT OF IN MY HIGH SCHOOL WHEN I WAS GROWING UP. BUT IT’S REALLY COOL TO SEE HOW
MANY PEOPLE THEY’RE WORKING WITH IN THE COMMUNITY TO PROVIDE
THESE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS. SO RIGHT OFF THE BAT,
I’M THINKING INTERNSHIP CAPABILITIES. I’M THINKING CAREER AND
TECHNICAL EDUCATION, SORT OF PROGRAMMING. I’M ALSO THINKING ARTS
INTEGRATION PROGRAMS, AND THAT’S SOMETHING A THAT’S CURRENTLY
IN OUR WHEELHOUSE. WE DO ARTS INTEGRATION, BRINGING
MOVEMENT INTO THE CLASSROOM, TO TEACH REGULAR SUBJECT MATERIAL
IN A MORE EMBODIED FASHION. SO THAT’S ALWAYS SOMETHING I’M

ENTIRE COMMUNITY, AND THE ENTIRE VILLAGE INSIDE A SCHOOL THAT IT

COMES DOWN TO AWARENESS, REACHING OUT. I THINK THAT THE MORE BUSINESSES
AND SCHOOLS CAN COMMUNICATE AND GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER’S NEEDS
AND EACH OTHER’S RESOURCES, THE BETTER THAT WE CAN WORK TOGETHER
TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER. I THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS A
REALLY COOL EXPERIENCE TO GET OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE
A LITTLE BIT. BUT ALSO, JUST HAVE A REALLY
GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE. I’M REALLY EXCITED TO TAKE
WHAT I’VE LEARNED INTO MY EXPERIENCE WHEN I GO INTO

COLLABORATION AND CROSS-SECTOR COLLABORATION. MY ADVICE TO ANYBODY WHO’S
TRYING TO SUPPORT THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITIES IN THAT WAY IS TO
REALLY START TALKING TO PEOPLE. THAT’S THE ONLY WAY TO SORT OF
REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT THE NEEDS ARE, AND UNDERSTAND HOW YOU
BEST FIT INTO THOSE THINGS.>>THAT TALK IS HAPPENING TODAY,
