Mayor Bloomberg Explains Why He Apologized For His ‘Stop And Frisk’ Policing Policy

>>Stephen: HEY, EVERYBODY,
WELCOME BACK. HERE WE’RE WE’RE HERE TALKING
WITH MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG WHO ARE FUNNING FOR THE DEMOCRATIC
NOMINATION FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. ONE WEEK BEFORE YOU AWE NOUNCED
YOUR CANDIDACY YOU GAVE A SPEECH WHERE YOU APOLOGIZED FOR STOP
AND FRISK.>>YUP.>>Stephen: WHAT MOTIVATED YOU
IN THAT MOMENT OTHER THAN THE FACT YOU WERE TRYING TO APPEAL
TO A BROADER DEMOCRATIC COALITION?>>LOOK, I STARTED OUT WITH 650
MURDERS A YEAR IN THE CITY, MOSTLY YOUNG MINORITY MALES. HAD TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. YOUR RESPONSIBILITY IS TO STOP
THE CARNAGE. DID THE BEST I COULD. NEAR THE END, I REALIZED WE WERE
GETTING OUT OF CONTROL AND DOING IT TOO MUCH. ACTUALLY TALKED TO THE WOMAN
WHO’S MY ASSISTANT WHO SITS NEXT TO ME, HAS A YOUNG SON, AND WE
TALKED ABOUT WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF HER SON WAS GETTING STOPPED. AND I TOOK A LOOK AND SAID LET’S
TRY SOMETHING: STOP DOING THE STOP AND FRISK AND SEE WHAT
HAPPENS. WE THOUGHT MURDERS WOULD GO UP,
AND IT DIDN’T. I SAID LET’S PHASE IT OUT. AND BEFORE I LEFT OFFICE, WE CUT
95% OF THEM OUT. THEN I– SOMEBODY SAID, “WHAT
DID YOU DO?” I SAID, “I MADE A MISTAKE.” AND IF YOU CAN’T APOLOGIZE, I
DON’T KNOW HOW YOU LIVE WITH YOURSELF. SOMETIMES YOU JUST– NOT
EVERYTHING GOES RIGHT– NOT EVERYTHING GOES THE RIGHT WAY. SOMETIMES YOU DO SOMETHING
WRONG. APOLOGIZE AND GET ON WITH IT.>>Stephen: WELL, WHILE YOU
WERE MAYOR THERE WAS A LOT OF CRITICISM FROM IT. IT WENT FROM 95,000 STOP AND
FRISK WHEN YOU STARTED TO 600,000 AT ITS PEAK. AND THERE WAS A LOT OF
CRITICISM. WHY NOT ASSESS IT WHILE IT’S
GOING ON? AS A LEADER, WE WANT TON WHILE
YOU’RE IN POWER YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND, NOT AFTER IT DOESN’T
MATTER.>>NO, WE DID. BUT THE MURDER RATE WENT FROM
650 DOWN TO 300. WE REDUCED DRAMATICALLY. AND —
>>Stephen: BUT YOU’RE SAYING IT WASN’T BECAUSE OF STOP AND
FRISK BECAUSE WHEN YOU STOPPED IT, IT DIDN’T CHANGE ANYTHING.>>WELL, WE DID THE BEST THING
WE COULD. I THINK IT HAD SOMETHING TO DO
WITH IT. YOU DO TOO MUCH OF ONE THING YOU
STOPPED DOING IT. WE REDUCED THE INCARCERATION
RATE. WE REDUCED THE RECIDIVISM RATE. WE STARTED A WHOLE BUNCH OF
PROGRAMS FOR YOUNG KIDS, ONE OF WHICH PRESIDENT OBAMA COPIED FOR
THE NATION. YOU HAVE TO DO ALL THE DIFFERENT
THINGS AND TRY AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.>>Stephen: WHEN YOU WERE
MAYOR OF NEW YORK, DID YOU EVER HAVE TO DEAL WITH DONALD TRUMP
WHO IS, YOU KNOW, BY HIS OWN DESCRIPTION A PROMINENT NEW
YORKER, CERTAINLY A FAMOUS GUY, A “BOSTON HERALD,” AS HE SAYS,
IN NEW YORK?>>HE WAS REASONABLY WELL KNOWN. HE WAS A REAL ESTATE PROMOTER.>>Stephen: NOT DEVELOPER. YOU CALL A “PROMOTER.”>>I THINK SO. A LOT OF BUILDINGS HE DIDN’T
BUILD. HE JUST PUT HIS NAME ON IT.>>Stephen: OKAY. DID YOU GUYS HANG OUT? DID YOU GUYS DO ANYTHING
TOGETHER?>>WELL, WE CUT SOME RIBBONS
TOGETHER. HE BOUGHT THE RICE RIGHTS TO
BUILD A CLUB HOUSE.>>Stephen: I TRUSTED HIM WITH
A SHARP OBJECT.>>I STOOD FAR AWAY. I ACTUALLY PLAYED GOLF WITH HIM
ONCE AT A CHARITY TOURNAMENT.>>Stephen: DID HE CHEAT? DID HE CHEAT?>>NO, BECAUSE WE HAD FIVE BALLS
IN THE AIR ANYWHERE. BUT HE HAS A REPUTATION OF,
SHALL WE SAY, NOT BEING SCRUPULOUS IN HOW HE COUNTS
STROKES.( APPLAUSE ).>>Stephen: OR WIVES–
>>WE TOOK THE SUBWAY TO–( APPLAUSE )
HE– HE DHOWEVER, THE ONE TIME I TALKED TO HIM AFTER HE WAS
ELECTED BUT BEFORE HE TOOK OFFICE, HE GAVE ME HIS PERSONAL
CELL PHONE NUMBER.>>Stephen: PLEASE TELL ME YOU
STILL HAVE IT.>>I DIDN’T BOTHIR TO WRITE IT
DOWN.>>Stephen: DAMN IT! WE CAN CALL HIM RIGHT NOW. WHAT’S IT LIKE ON THE ROAD. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN SO FAR? IF YOU’RE NOT CAMPAIGNING
HEAVILY IN THE FIRST FOUR STATES, WHERE IS YOUR FOCUS
RIGHT NOW?>>WE’VE BEEN TO 20 STATES AND
40 CITIES. I START GOING OUT TO THE WEST
COAST ON THURSDAY MORNING.>>Stephen: CALIFORNIA BEING
SUPER TUESDAY THIS TIME.>>CALIFORNIA, AND THEN THROUGH
UTAH– ACTUALLY, I’M GOING TO WASHINGTON, D.C. FIRST, AND THEN
OUT THERE, GO THROUGH IDAHO, GO THROUGH UTAH, AND THEN BACK. BUT IT WILL BE SIX DAYS ON THE
ROAD. AND THEN I’LL BE BACK FOR A
COUPLE DAYS, AND YOU DO IT AGAIN. I’VE GOT A GREAT STAFF. THEY DO ALL THE THINGS BACK
HERE, AND MY JOB IS TO GET OUT AND LET PEOPLE SEE WHO I AM, AND
HOPEFULLY THEY’LL LIKE ME, AND IF THEY DON’T, NOTHING ELSE I
CAN DO, JUST BE MYSELF.>>Stephen: WELL, YOU HAVE A
$10 MILLION AD BUY IN THE SUPER BOWL.>>YES.>>Stephen: YOU CAN TELL US
ANYTHING ABOUT THE AD?>>
>>YES BUT I’M NOT GOING TO TELL YOU.( LAUGHTER )
NO, THE ONLY THING I’LL SAY IS IT’S A SERIOUS SUBJECT. I’M A BELIEVER THAT I SHOULD BE
SPENDING MY MONEY TO DO WHAT I THINK IS RIGHT AND GIVE PEOPLE
OPTIONS. AND IT DOESN’T QUITE FIT IN WITH
POPCORN AND BEER. BUT IT’S A CHANCE TO REACH AN
AWFUL LOT OF PEOPLE. AND IT TALKS ABOUT SOMETHING
THAT I CARE VERY MUCH ABOUT, AND I THINK IS IMPORTANT TO THE
COUNTRY.>>Stephen: WELL, MR. MAYOR,
THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. GOOD LUCK. IF WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A
BILLIONAIRE PRESIDENT YOU SEEM LEAK A MUCH NICER ONE. AND ALL THE LUCK IN THE WORLD. MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG,
EVERYBODY! WE’LL BE RIGHT BACK.

  1. I don't think that this man truly grasps how traumatizing it must have been to be a person of color and be subjected to that kind of racism and harassment. He is just another rich, white man who thinks he knows what is best for everyone else. He is not a bad man, but he is nothing different than what America already has in power. Maybe he can just get on with it, but the people that he traumatized could not.

  2. Mr. Blomberg just send me some of that money your wasting on your campaign because your not going to win. Better yet. Invest in my company.

  3. Man when Stephen fearlessly, intelligently and respectfully calls out these politicians face to face it is the hottest thing 😍

  4. "We want to know that while you're in power you'll change your mind, not after it doesn't matter." Haha! Damn Stephen was viscious with that one.

  5. How do you feel about mass incarceration? How do you plan to help those leaving prison who are African American/black and male? How do you plan to address mental health, criminal, and racial stigma? Apologies are words…I only respect action.

  6. Yes, one of the richest men in the Country will totally take on the Billionaire class and their corrupting influence in every industry. The fact the he bought his way in the polls is just him saving us money. Put your trust in Bloomberg, he's richer than Trump!

  7. Bloomberg has billions invested in china. He's not looking out for citizens, he's looking out for his money. He's losing millions by Trump's tariff's on china. Bloomberg will spend as much money as he needs to protect his money maker aka Chna.

  8. NEVERTRUMP 2020
    VOTE BLUE NO MATTER WHO!
Yang looks good to me, I could use that $1000 a month that he's promising!

  9. I'm not an American but he truly does seem like the better billionaire, if in fact Dump-Trump is one. Bloomberg is certainly flawed but the fact he is self-funded makes him of a higher standard than Dump-Trump right? If only Dump-Trump had declared to do the opposite of Obama on that front too. This guy can get through a coherent sentence, hasn't made up his own words nor has he tried to blow himself as Dump-Trump does. Amongst other things, that makes him an upgrade from the current administration, however a smarter billionaire is still a billionaire and that is a far cry from where the majority of the population live their lives. I hereby nominate cookie monster for POTUS! JK. Feel the Bern!

  10. his run is a personal vendetta against trump. he doesn't care about the citizens of the country. he is going to run a super bowl ad just to get at trump. i'm not saying this as a trump fan, but just to point out this is a personality contest between bloomberg vs trump. they hated each other in new york. just like trump used to make fund of romney/. just billionaires having an ego feud. bloomberg doesn't care about the country – he just wants to beat trump.

  11. Anyone with any type of record of fucking with black people Definitely won’t get my vote don’t give af how you slice it up.

  12. He not only made his own money and power. He can handle money and power the other thing that makes him a great leader is not only did he create thousands of jobs and empower underlings but he can delegate and not be a control freak which is very rare in the entrepreneurial billionaire community.

  13. "Sometimes you make a mistake, fuck over peoples lives, traumatize children, and demonize large groups of people. You apologize, not directly to any victims, and move on with it while trying to do the same job you clearly can't be trusted to do."

  14. But you didn't answer the question as to why you apologized only a week before you annouced your plan to run for president..

Bloomberg: "try, see what happens"… What exactly does that mean?

  15. 1:38 Stephen is right: apologizing years later when it doesn’t matter (or just to win votes, that makes it even worse!) is worthless. If Bloombergs way is ok, than cadet bone spurs has a lot of years to apologize for his presidency…
Also: first he says ending the stop and frisk didn't influence numbers of murders, then suddenly it is one of the causes of a lowering murder rate? This guy does not have his story straight: I don't trust him.

  16. Wow! I didn't think a "Stop and Frisk Black Men" policy would be legal, even in a Shithole country like the USA, go figure!

  17. Soooo, let me see if I got this straight. The Democratic Party hates corporate America, billionaires and rich old white guys. They are for campaign finance reform and certainly despised stop and frisk policies as racist. Yet here we are with the epitome of what they have been vehemently against as one of their presidential hopefuls? Raise your hand if you are confused?

  18. Billionaires are not the right choice to be a polititian!
There are enough rich people influncers an lobbyists!
I kniw why they run, because they see the end of their richness!
They dont derserve it to be rich!
Nurses, firefighters, doctors and good people should be, rich people are rich because they stole the money!

I mean look at reality, workers do their best, managers screw it, stock owners get rich and the workers suffer!
    Thats the fact!
In my mind it seems ok to lock managers up if they ruin a comoany, their money and property should taken, sold in an auction and the workers should get the bonus!

  19. This guy just brushes of his policy as a mistake… disgusting, this affected people and effectively made people second class citizens. You cant just "apologize " and let it go. What an ass.

  20. 😝He did nothing for city employees.I work for N.Y.C.H.A. The person he appointed.as chairman.needs to be investigated .And forget contact negotiations.that being said.I pray in Christ name that Bloomberg like every one else.lose to Trump.Amen🙏😃

  21. He was one NY mayor who looked the other way when Trump and Kushner's family were dirty dealing and getting away with it. Then Guilliani was NY mayor when Trump bought him off too and now hires him and is son on our tax dollar. Bloomberg has a bad reputation and is heavily invested in China. He's protecting his interests. Tom Steyer is wealthy too but he has a good reputation and has invested a lot in coalitions that help communities. Big difference.

  22. He can apologize all he wants he could have put that money toward helping minorities and WTP will never vote for his racist stop and frisk only blacks

  23. Here is the real question: why does a billionaire need to run for the presidency?
To protect their asset from taxation and sign laws unjustly targetting the Most vulnerable. He did it once when he had power, he' ll Do it again. He can shove his apology where the Light doesn't shine.

  24. Bloomberg was a business man who openly dealt with trump and now he denies him and he’s not a democrat he’s paying for his own campaign and sent many blacks to prison and hurt many families and thinks we’re gonna vote for him when he hasn’t used any of his wealth to help minorities….. go crawl in the back door of the Illuminati where you’re a secret society member

  25. I live on the island of St John in the USVI. Back in 2017 we were absolutely devastated by Irma, then 13 days later by Maria. Bloomberg spent millions to bring down NY and NJ police, reconstruct the thousands of telephone poles that were destroyed, (we had no power for 4 months and it would have been much longer if it weren't for him), he and Tom Secunda donated generously to all our rescue and health charities, the list goes on. He rebuilt us. Say what you will about the guy but I can say one thing for the man. He gets things done. He sure as hell did more for us than frump did.

  26. So he based a policy that arguably violated people's fundimental basic rights to unwarranted search around his racist bigoted views and then apologized years later when it was made clear it wasn't at all founded in any form of reason or evidence. Yeah, totally sounds like someone who should ever hold public office. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Not to mention he is a billionaire and the last thing the US needs is a rich person in the White House, you've arguably tried that 45 times and look where it's gotten you! Stop being a corrupt theocracy and try actual democracy for once!

  27. The thought process he's displaying here regarding stop and frisk is critically flawed for a commander in chief (Good thing his maid was able to talk some sense into him up in his high chair.). More importantly, he's glossing over the fact that the entire debacle was patently unconstitutional to begin with.

  28. There appears to be a lot of foreign agents in the comments section. I wonder if that's why the video has so many down votes.

  29. Just because he's rich we got to see his face all over the place, as if stealing a third term wasn't enough, no one cares about what this worn out muppet wants to say. YOU REDUCED THE QUALITY OF LIFE NEW YORKERS who are now moving out because they cant afford the rent while Manhattan has become an amusement park for the rich. how about you stop this BS now so you dont have to apologize for it in the future.

  30. So he is going to flush millions of money down the toilet for attention instead of using it for the betterment of his country or humanity in general. Just think of how many people are going to die from disease, injury, childbirth, accidents, homelessness, hunger, exposure, how many roads and bridges that will cause injury and money, and the number of people who will not get a proper education not because they are not smart enough, but because their parents were not rich enough so this brilliant mind grows dormant working a mindless job.
Brilliant plan, Daisy. You really care about your country, huh?

  31. I hate that it's been thousands of years since humans formed society and we still pretend that "rich" is a meaningful qualification.

  32. If Bloomberg was sincere when he says that he no.1 priority is removing Trump from office (I don’t think he says that specifically in this interview, but he has previously) he would spend his time and dollars backing one of the candidates who actually have a shot at winning.

  33. All I can say, is that I would be more inclined to trust someone saying "yup" to a question than 45th using any plumbing argument to circumvent the question.
At this point, ANYTHING, but the orange turd will do. And Bloomberg will do. Plus if he truly will support any democratic candidate. That's fine by me.
    Feel the Bern, #BernieSanders #PresidentSanders #2020Elections

  34. Well, at least Stephen used the phrase "Billionaire President" in his last sentence, but I think that should have been the focus of his questions.

  35. Colbert, if you want Trump's contact information, just look through Jeffrey Epstein's personal files! It's right there.
