Legislature Deals Blow To De Blasio

IN A BLOW MAYOR DE BLASIO IS NOT PUSHING THE PANIC BUTTON JUST YET. THE LEGISLATURE WE WANT HOME WITHOUT A SCHOOL SYSTEM VOTE. Reporter: THE MAYOR SAYS THERE IS TIME TO WORK SOMETHING OUT. THERE IS STILL A WAY TO RESOLVE THIS. Reporter: HE IS NOT POINTING FINGERS OR EXPRESSING ANGER OVER THE FACT LAWMAKERS DID NOT REACH A COMPROMISE OVER THE SCHOOL CHILDREN. IF, GOD FORBID, MAYORAL CONTROL LAPSES THERE WILL BE MORE THAN ENOUGH TIME TO TALK ABOUT WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE. BUT THEY HAVE A GOT A CHANCE RIGHT NOW TO AVOID SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE ABSOLUTELY DESTRUCTIVE FOR OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM. Reporter: WHEN THEY LEFT ALBANY, FOR THE SUMMER, LAWMAKERS WERE FAR APART. THE SENATE BILL PAIRED CONTROL WITH AN INCREASE IN CHARTER SCHOOLS. SENATE MAJORITY LEADER JOHN FLANAGAN ISSUED A STATEMENT SAYING I WILL CONTINUE TO WORK TO EXTEND MAYORAL CONTROL, BECAUSE I BELIEVE VERY STRONGLY IN THE ACCOUNTABILITY IT PROVIDES. BUT I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THE 50,000 BOYS AND GIRLS IN HARLEM, BROOKLYN AND THE BRONX WHO ARE NOW ON A WAITING LIST FOR A SEAT INSIDE A CHARTER SCHOOL, DESERVE THE BEST
