“I-PIN” numbers to be used for authentication instead of ID numbers starting July
From July,… Korean consumers will be able
to use their online identification pin number in the offline world.
The Ministry of Security and Public Administration says it will introduce a new way of confirming
a person’s identity using so-called “i-PIN” numbers instead of resident registration numbers,…
which are the equivalent of social security numbers in the U.S.
i-PIN numbers are more secure as users can change both their code and password when they
suspect their i-PIN has been stolen and the system uses an encrypted data transfer channel
to minimize the possibility of data leakage. The government’s move comes on the heels of
a revised bill regarding personal data protection… that prohibits the collection and exploitation
of resident registration numbers from August. The Korean government came under intense fire
earlier this year for the country’s biggest ever personal data leak.
