Global Trade Diplomatic Simulation: Importance of Intellectual Property Rights

Intellectual property is property like any
other. If you’re a carpenter, and you build a table,
you’ve built a table. It’s your table. You can see it at your price in a store. If you’re a songwriter and you write a song,
it’s your property. You should have the ownership of that property. If you are an inventor and you invent a new
machine that does something novel and very interesting, you also own the rights to the
machine, the idea, your ideas. So intellectual property has a great deal
to do with ownership of one’s own creations. It could be a song, it could be a computer
program. It could be a type of machinery. It is an important issue that figures prominently
in our economic diplomacy and our economic diplomacy interests. Nearly 1/3rd of the U.S. workforce works in
IP related industries. Over 45 million American workers have some connection with
intellectual property related industries. There’s a huge economic importance attached
to this and as a consequence the United States is very vigilant internationally on how we
go about protecting the rights of our citizens and also promoting a
fair and level playing field.
