California bill requiring age verification for some purchases clears Assembly

LAWMAKERS ARE DOING AND HOW IT
COULD CHANGE HOW YOU SHOP
ONLINE. KEVIN. KEVIN A PROPOSED LAW WRITTEN IN
: RESPONSE TO A KCRA3
INVESTIGATION HAS CLEARED THE
ASSEMBLY AND IS HEADED FOR A
VOTE IN THE STATE SENATE. IT WOULD REQUIRE SOME SORT OF
AGE VERIFICATION FOR ONLINE
SALES OF WEAPONS, TOBACCO AND
OTHER FORBIDDEN ITEMS. AFTER A SACRAMENTO MAN’S CHILD
WAS ABLE TO BUY AN ASSORTMENT OF
WEAPONS FROM AMAZON ONLINE,
ITEMS HIS SON COULDN’T PURCHASE
LEGALLY IN A STORE HE TURNED TO
, BOTH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND THE LAWMAKERS FOR HELP. AFTER WEEKS OF PHONE CALLS AND
EMAILS, HE SAID THE ATTORNEY
GENERAL’S OFFICE HAS NOW
REQUESTED ALL OF HIS
COMMUNICATIONS WITH AMAZON. ALAN ERCOLINI SAID AMAZON SOLD
HIS TEENAGE SON WEAPONS WITHOUT
VERIFYING THE CHILD’S AGE.>>AND I SAID WHY WOULDN’T THE
, ATTORNEY GENERAL LOOK INTO AN
ORGANIZATION OR A COMPANY THAT
IS BREAKING THE LAW? MAX —
KEVIN: ERCOLINI TOLD AN ASSEMBLY
COMMITTEE HOW EASY IT WAS FOR
HIS SON TO GET FORBIDDEN ITEMS
AND THERE WERE NO PROTECTIONS
FOR PARENTS OR CHILDREN. THE ASSEMBLY HAS NOW PASSED A
BILL THAT WOULD REQUIRE SOME
FORM OF AGE VERIFICATION WHICH
COULD INCLUDE AN I.D. CHECK
BEFORE CERTAIN ITEMS COULD BE
SOLD TO ANYONE ONLINE.>>SO IT WOULD CLARIFY THE LAW
IN A WAY THAT WOULD BE FIRST IN
THE NATION, UNPRECEDENTED AND AS
PROTECTIVE OF RIGHTS AS PARENTS
AS YOU CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE. KEVIN: WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE NEW
LEGISLATION AN AMAZON
, SPOKESPERSON SAID IN AN EMAIL
, THANKS FOR FOLLOWING UP BUT WE
DON’T HAVE COMMENT ON THIS. EROCOLINI SAID ONLINE WINE SALES
ALREADY REQUIRE I.D. CHECKS AND
OTHER RETAILERS SHOULD FOLLOW
SUIT.>>WE ARE NOT ASKING THEM T
CHANGE THEIR ENTIRE PROCESSES
BUT IT SEEMED LIKE THE MOST
, SIMPLE SOLUTIONS WERE HIT WITH
NO, WE CAN’T DO THAT.

  1. What the old rule of thumb you must be 18 to use a credit card wasn't enough. Shame on parents who let their children have access to their credit cards.

  2. Our lawmakers have something better to do to create laws that are common sense. What a waste of time .18 and older to use credit cards. They have parents control over the account over credit card

  3. These kids are using their parents credit cards and it should not be the responsibility of the government to police their children.
It should be the parents responsibility especially when they see activity on said credit cards.
Just another way that brother wants to encroach into your freedoms.
