Assemblymember Wicks Adjourns Assembly in Memory of Berkeley Activist George Barbero


I rise today to adjourn the memory of George
but pero a resident of the city of Berkeley who passed away on August 18 at the age of
101. Born Californian and raised in Italy George
joined the Italian partisan forces in opposition to the **** and fascists in World War 2. His partisan activities included assisting
downed American English pilots and as an English speaker George also assisted the allies in
their efforts to capture northern Italy after the war George received a certificate of patriot
by the supreme commander of the allied forces in the Mediterranean he also met the love
of his life, Katerina Gregorio after the war. On 4/28/1947 George and Katerina were together
for 65 years until her death in August of 2012 George was a lifelong pacifist an environmentalist
dedicated to working for peace and social justice he never miss the opportunity to attend
an anti war protest to help the less fortunate or to educate others on the climate crisis
when he was in his eighties he started collecting surplus spread from the acme bakery in Berkeley
and delivered it daily to homeless shelters and soup kitchens in the East Bay for 10 years. George is survived by his son’s Marcello and
Guido 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren I ask that this house adjourn in his memory
today.
